Maintenance tips for your waste balers and compactors

Published on 16/01/2025

As well as complying with legal requirements, which vary from country to country, regular maintenance and checks on certain key components will help prevent breakdowns, extend the life of your machine and optimise its performance. In this guide, you'll find all the advice from our after-sales service by product range.

Reminder of the rules before any intervention

Certain general rules, particularly safety rules, apply whatever your equipment:

  • Never ignore or disable a safety device.
  • Always wear your PPE when using or maintaining the machine (safety shoes, waistcoat, gloves, etc.).
  • Mark out the area and lock up the press if necessary.

Vertical balers

Cleaning and checks to be carried out :

  • Daily cleaning of the upper part of the compaction plate.
  • Weekly check of safety devices (e.g. emergency stop test).
  • Weekly visual check of the general condition of the machine to detect any breakages or anticipate breakdowns (oil on the ground, mechanical breakage, cracks in the frame, etc.).
  • Weekly general cleaning.

About using the machine :

  • Do not load waste that is not compatible with the machine, only cardboard and plastic if the machine is set up for this use.
  • Make sure that the waste is loaded evenly, and avoid inserting blocks of cardboard that are too thick, which could block the cut and/or create jams.

Horizontal balers

At least once a week, carry out the following checks and cleaning to ensure optimum use of the machine:

  • Check the safety devices (emergency stop, protective grilles, etc.).
  • Clean the cylinder chamber through the dedicated trapdoor, moving the piston to the front position to prevent breakage and malfunctions. You must lock the press to carry out this operation.
  • Cleaning the twisting block: remove all wire residue to avoid binding defects.
  • Cleaning under the needles (daily) to prevent breakage + checking that the needles pass through the plunger. Check that the grooves are clear. If there are any obstructions, lock up your press and clean it.
  • Check that there are 4 spools of wire for perfect binding.
  • Carry out a general visual check (leaks, breakage, condition of hoses, etc.).
  • General cleaning of the frame - do not store anything on the frame that could interfere with the technician's work.
  • If your baler is not equipped with an end-of-bale cell, be sure to remove the bales.
  • If your baler is fitted with a container lifter, release the up/down control as soon as the machine has reached the stop. Forcing the control can damage the equipment.

Waste compactors

Compactors are easier to maintain and use, all you need to do is :

  • Check the safety devices (emergency stop, protective grilles, etc.).
  • Carry out a weekly visual check of the general condition of the machine.
  • On monobloc compactors: check that the gripping rings are in good condition and comply with the minimum diameter of 40mm. This check is carried out during the mandatory periodic inspections, but you can also carry out a more regular check.
  • If your press is equipped with a container lifter, release the up/down control as soon as the machine has reached the stop. Forcing the control can damage the equipment.
